(More customer reviews)Howell (author) and Charny (photographer) have created a highly useful and informative little book to help amateurs identify Alabama butterflies in the field. But this handy little book is so much more than just another field guide. It is packed with accounts of the life histories, food plants, habitats, and curious facts about each butterfly. Howell has done a superb job collecting much useful information about Alabama butterflies and compiling it in a user freindly format. Each species account includes maps where these butterflies have been seen in Alabama and also provides range information, making the book more than just another state guide. Most of the photographs are taken in the field, a truly challenging task given the flitty nature of many butterflies. Charny's photographs are excellent and give a good representation of the appearance of butterflies as they would be encountered afield. If you liked Spiders of Eastern United States by Howell and Jenkins (2004, Pearson Education), you will also like this book, which is useful all over the eastern US. I have used Howell's spider book until it is dirty, dog-eared, and almost falling apart and plan to get just as much use and enjoyment from this wonderful new book. It is an authoratative and readable book about eastern US bvutterflies. I recommend it highly.
