The Galápagos Islands are approximately "600 miles (966 kilometers) east of Equador" and consist of nineteen large and small islands. The chain also has "dozens of tiny ones called inlets." These islands were created more than nine million years ago when the area was shaken by a lot of volcanic activity. The author tells you to "be prepared to step into a whole different world" when you look into this book. Of course Charles Darwin was amazed at the diversity when he arrived in 1835. Among the unusual creatures you will encounter are the Galápagos barn owl, the blue-footed booby, a marine iguana, the Galápagos penguin, the Santa Fe rice rat, the Galápagos sea lion and many more unique creatures.
When you are ready to roll, so to speak, and begin reading the book you pick a tertiary consumer, turn to the designated page and begin making your way through the Galápagos Island food chain. When you arrived at your chosen page, you are able to read a nice comprehensive story about a species and check out some photographs. At the end of this material you will find a sentence that says something like, "Last night for dinner, the Galápagos barn owl snacked on . . . " and when you turn the page you will read about several things the species may have eaten. Then you choose one, go to another page and read about that creature. It may sound a tad confusing, but even the most reluctant reader will be turning page after page.
This is was an amazingly creative way to structure a book. Mind you, the reader can choose to simply read the book from cover to cover, but it was loads of fun picking my own destination until I'd read the whole book and knew a great deal about the unique species on the Galápagos Islands. Reading this book was like playing a game. You can go on and on, but you're always a winner. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a bibliography and additional recommended book and website resources. Before you know it, you will have hop, hop, hopped your way through a fantastic chain of adventure and discovery!

Welcome to the Galápagos Islands! As you follow a path through the black lava rock on one of the islands, you may hear the sea lions barking or the hum of a white-lined sphinx moth flying past your head. The Galápagos Islands are full of life, from a huge tortoise trudging toward a cactus patch to a Galápagos barn owl gliding in the air, ready to snatch up a Santa Fe rice rat. Day and night in the Galápagos Islands, the hunt is on to find food - and to avoid becoming someone else's next meal. All the living things are connected to one another in a food chain, from animal to animal, animal to plant, plant to insect, and insect to animal. What path will you take to follow the food chain through the islands? Will you . . . Go fishing with a blue-footed booby? Snack on some crabs with a Galápagos sea lion? Dive under the reef in search of algae with a marine iguana? Follow all three chains and many more on this who-eats-what adventure!
